Nippy Noya (born February 27, 1946 in Makassar on Sulawesi , Indonesia ) is an Indonesian percussionist and one of the most famous conga players in Europe.

Life

Noya was the son of Japanese Taiko - drummer born Fusao Nakato San on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi. He started playing drums at the age of ten. In 1968 he came to Europe and initially lived in Amsterdam . There his professional career as a conga player began. He participated in numerous Dutch productions, including a. by Jackpot , Group 1850 , Earth & Fire , Jan Akkerman and Golden Earring . With other musicians of Moluccan origin, he recorded two albums for the Dutch percussion rock band Massada in 1978 and 1979 and later also worked on the solo project of Massada guitarist Chris Latul .

At an international level, German jazz and fusion musicians in particular became aware of Noya early on. From 1977 he took part in productions by Eberhard Schoener , Peter Herbolzheimer , Charly Antolini , and Volker Kriegel , and in 1978 on Udo Lindenberg's Dröhnland Symphony . Together with Peter Herbolzheimer, he also accompanied Lindenberg on his tour in 1978/79. Noya then worked for Eric Burdon , who made his comeback on Lindenberg's tour, as well as for Peter Maffay and Johnny Tame or Volker Lechtenbrink . Noya had long-standing connections to many musicians and was involved in several of her publications over the years.

In the 1980s, Noya also worked more often with Billy Cobham and on various projects by Cobham's bassist Wolfgang Schmid . Together with Cobham, but also in other combinations, Noya became part of the super drumming events organized by Pete York in the late 1980s. Noya can also be heard in various Christian productions of those years, including a. on albums by Jan Vering and Dieter Falk .

From the late 1980s he worked on some productions of the Kelly Family , by Stefan Remmler and Phil Carmen . In 1993/94 he belonged to Herbert Grönemeyer's touring band , and a little later to Ulla Meinecke's touring band .

In the years after 2000 he played on albums of some Polish jazz musicians, but also on a late album by the folk band Magna Carta . In the second half of the 2000s he was a. a. seen on stage with the band Bröselmaschine and involved in publications by Uli Jon Roth and Trio Farfarello .

In the 2010s he performed with saxophonist Benjamin Herman and participated in the John Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders tribute project KaMa Quartet . In the recent past he was also a member or permanent guest of the formations YóBassa , Busch-Werk and Trans // Formation .

In addition to his favorite instruments, the congas and the kalimba , he is also proficient in bongos , campana , güiro , cabasa , shékere , caxixi , triangle and berimbau . He is at home in traditional South American music as well as in contemporary jazz , rock and pop music .

Since 1992 Nippy Noya has held a chair for music at the ArtEZ Conservatory in Enschede .
