Phil Carmen (actually Herbert Hofmann ; born February 14, 1953 in Lucerne , Switzerland ) is a Swiss musician and producer . He became known in 1985 for the jazzy pop song On My Way in LA

Life

Herbert Hofmann grew up in Frankfurt am Main and in Lucerne (Switzerland). In Lucerne he went to the conservatory and completed an apprenticeship as an accountant.

In 1967 Hofmann was the band leader of the school band The High Lifes in Stans . In 1972 he founded the Herbie Hofmann Sextet based on the model of Pepe Lienhard . The band achieved a big goal by playing at the TCS ball, which was very popular at the time, in the culture and congress center in Lucerne . It was in this formation that the first professional recordings for a single were made in a studio in Wettingen in 1973 . In 1970 Hoffmann was the band leader of The Green Fog , which was rehearsing in Oberdorf . The band performed in Obwalden and Nidwalden .

In the early 1970s Herbert Hofmann took over the Amberg store in Stans, where he sold LPs and singles as well as guitars. He gave guitar lessons on the lower floor. During this time Hofmann was also a member of Angy Burri's band Apaches .

In the seventies Hofmann took on the stage name Phil Carmen and from 1975 embarked on a career as a musician. With the bassist Mike Thompson (actually: Marcel Galuzzi) he founded the duo Carmen & Thompson , which mainly played country music. The single Time Moves On made it to number 31 on the Italian charts in 1980, and they took part in the 1981 Sanremo Festival with the song Follow Me .

After seven years of stage experience, Phil Carmen founded Picar Studios in Stein am Rhein (Switzerland) in 1982 . Two solo albums were created here, but they received no attention. It wasn't until 1985 that he made his breakthrough with the LP Walkin 'the Dog . The released single On My Way in LA became his greatest success and climbed to 18th place in Germany and 9th place in Switzerland in the summer of 1985. In addition, the number was used in 1988 in the television series Wilder Westen inclusive . The album Walkin 'the Dog reached number 3 in Switzerland.

In 1986 his album Wise Monkeys was released . While the LP occupied number 1 in the Swiss charts, the single Moonshine Still that was released was able to advance to number 10 on the charts. In Germany this album was a flop. His last successful album as a solo artist was City Walls from 1987. With this, he reached number 10 on the Swiss charts.

In 1986 he founded the country band Clover Leaf . In 1989 he produced the Nena album Wunder gescheh'n . In the following years, either albums from Clover Leaf or compilations came onto the market. It wasn't until 1993 that a new studio album called Skyline was released . Today he is increasingly committed to animal welfare and dedicated a song to this work with the title God's Creation . In 1996 an album was released with cover versions of his favorite musician Bob Dylan .
