Dieter Falk (born December 5, 1959 in Klafeld-Geisweid , today Siegen ) is a German music producer , keyboard player , arranger and composer .

Life

He received his first piano lessons at the age of six and violin lessons at the age of eleven. After graduating from the Evangelisches Gymnasium Siegen-Weidenau , he studied jazz , church music and school music at the Cologne University of Music from 1979 to 1985  - with a major in piano and a minor in saxophone. At that time he accompanied with his rhythm section, among other things, the religious concerts of the former pop singer Inge Brück , which were released on albums in 1982.

In 1985 his first solo records On Time and Instrumental Journey appeared , on which he presented church choirs . In addition, he accompanied artists such as Gitte Hænning , Katja Ebstein , Amy Grant , Kenny Rogers and Edwin Hawkins as a studio musician and was named Keyboarder of the Year several times by the specialist journal Musikmagazin .

In Wolfgang Schmid's jazz-rock band "Kick" he played from 1989 to 1992, among others, along with Billy Cobham , Nippy Noya , Peter Wolpl and Wolfgang Haffner . One appearance was recorded on the ARD show Ohne Filter

In 1988 the piece Back to the Roots was published, which was mainly known as background music in the WDR 2 radio broadcast Schlagerrallye . In 1989 the jazz-rock-emphasized album Dieter Falk was released , which he recorded together with Steve Lukather .

In the late 80s, Falk worked as a producer and session musician in Los Angeles and Nashville with, among others, Abe Laboriel , Alex Acuña , Lee Konitz , Jerry Hey, Chuck Findley and Dann Huff .

By 1990 he had produced over 100 long-playing records from the Christian scene, especially for the label (publisher) Pila Music . Often he is involved in the recordings as a keyboardist and / or arranger.

From 1990 he became a producer of the group Pur , with which he reached the top position of the German sales lists several times, including the million seller Adventure Land . In addition, he produced the top 20 successes in Germany One to Make Her Happy (14th place) by Marque , and Tingling in the stomach (16th place) by Pe Werner . There were other producer successes with Patricia Kaas , Brings , Nazareth , Roger Chapman , Guildo Horn , Reba McEntire , Marshall & Alexander , Paul Young , Karel Gott and Nana Mouskouri , Nino de Angelo , Francine Jordi , Detlev Jöcker & Delirious.

In 1994 he published his second piano school "Rock-Pop-Piano Workshop" at Voggenreiter-Verlag , a summary of his piano work column in the magazine "Keyboards"

Falk has his own label (Stereo Wonderland) and has been nominated six times for the Echo as the most successful producer. With several music projects, Falk was able to win over 50 platinum and gold records - for more than 20 million records sold.

From August to November 2006 he was a jury member in the ProSieben telecast pop stars , from which the girl group Monrose emerged. Falk was a co-producer on the debut album Temptation (1st place). Also in the sixth season of the casting format , Popstars on Stage , he accompanied the candidates as a vocal coach and jury member. In 2006 he released the solo album "A Tribute to Paul Gerhardt", with which he received the Impala Award for over 30,000 CDs sold . Guest musician was among others Till Brönner .

In 2008 he produced and composed the comeback album by Daliah Lavi and accompanied the Israeli singer in spring 2009 as musical director on her farewell tour through twelve German cities.

In 2009 he wrote the pop oratorio The 10 Commandments together with Michael Kunze , which was premiered on January 17, 2010 as part of the Ruhr 2010 Capital of Culture in Dortmund's Westfalenhalle with a choir of 2,500 singers, a symphony orchestra and well-known soloists. In the same year he composed the Borussia-Dortmund-Jubiliäms-Hymn for 100 years (interpreted by the BVB Century Choir ), which reached number 80 in the German charts. At the beginning of 2011, together with the band Bilk , Falk composed the official promotional song for the Eurovision Song Contest in Düsseldorf: Tanzen (The Rhythm of My City) . Falk was involved in the project Die Priester (Charts: Top 20 in November 2011) as arranger, composer and co-producer of several titles . Also appeared in autumn 2011 in collaboration with his sons, Paul Falk album and Max Falk, Celebrate Bach of Falk & Sons , which won the "Jazz Award" for 20,000 CDs sold.

On February 23, 2013 his musical Moses (librettist: Michael Kunze) had its world premiere at the Theater St. Gallen . The musical is based on the Poporatorium The 10 Commandments and is a commission from the Creative Church , a musical initiative in the area of ​​the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD). In November 2013 the second Falk & Sons album TOCCATA was released, again jazz & pop arrangements by Johann Sebastian Bach . With this program Dieter Falk & Sons are touring Germany and Switzerland in concert. In 2015 he published his piano book 23 Jazz & Pop Arrangements for Solo Piano . In September 2015, his musical Do you know the myth? about the FC Schalke 04 premiere in the Musiktheater im Revier Gelsenkirchen. His pop oratorio Luther , written together with librettist Michael Kunze, premiered on October 31, 2015 in Dortmund's Westfalenhalle. From February to October 2017 Luther toured with over 30,000 participating singers through seven German concert arenas. In 2019, Falk was musical director of the “Little Red Riding Hood Night of Choirs” in Freyburg, Saxony. The world premiere of Falks Musical Bethlehem was postponed from December 5, 2020 to December 11, 2021 in May 2020.

Private

Falk has been married to his wife Angelika since 1985. The couple has two sons, Max and Paul , moved to Swabia in 1985, to Düsseldorf in 2006 and lived in Holland for a long time. His brother Martin Falk is a music editor at SWR . Falk sees himself as a Protestant and is a member of the Evangelical Church .

professorship

Since October 2013, Falk has been half a guest professor at the Institute for Music and Media at the Robert Schumann University of Applied Sciences in Düsseldorf with a focus on music production and popular singing. Since the winter semester 2018, the position has been extended and converted into a full professorship. With another half-time position, Falk has held a professorship at the Evangelical Pop Academy in Witten since the 2016 winter semester. At the beginning of the 2019 winter semester, Falk became a full-time lecturer for "New Spiritual Music" at the University of Catholic Church Music and Music Education in Regensburg . There he teaches conducting (pop / jazz choir), music production and gospel piano.
