School music (subject)
School music is the name for the artistic teaching course at grammar schools, specializing in music . The course is offered at most German music universities . It is an undergraduate course that requires the general university entrance qualification and is completed with the 1st state examination . This is followed by a one-and-a-half to two-year legal traineeship , which is concluded with the 2nd state examination. In the course of the Bologna reform, the degrees in many places were restructured to Bachelor / Master.
Entry requirements
The conservatoires set an entrance examination before the course, which can include short examinations in front of experts for the first instrument, vocals, piano, music theory and ensemble management as well as a short motivational interview. The individual examination components differ from university to university. In addition to the basic instrumental and vocal skills, assessment criteria are whether the speaking and singing voice is healthy, the German language can be pronounced clearly and correctly, whether the motivation for the job seems to be given and whether a melody is sung clearly, clearly and correctly can. The places for school music are limited. Often there are no more than twelve, at most 30, first-year students in a course, the number of which decreases further as the number of semesters increases, for example due to a different study orientation. For this reason, the number of trained music teachers is correspondingly small and the graduates are in great demand in schools.
The studies
The course includes:
- I. Artistic and practical music area: major instrument, piano and singing as compulsory minor subjects, conducting as well as subjects such as improvisation , musical score playing (both are also summarized as school piano playing, SchuPra for short), figured bass , rhythm, etc. a. offered.
- II. Music theory area: composition , ear training , composition , theory of forms , work analysis , instrumentation, etc. a.
- III. Musicology area: musicology , music education , educational science
- Possibly. Elective area: Chamber music , early music , children's voice training, accompaniment etc. a.
As a rule, the eight to ten semester study of school music is supplemented by a second subject, the so-called “scientific minor”, which is usually studied at another university afterwards or in parallel. Alternatively, some conservatoires offer so-called broadening subjects that can be studied at the conservatoire itself instead of the scientific minor. These are, for example, jazz / pop, church music and musicology . At some universities it is also possible to choose a focus, such as class music , musicology or music theater . In Baden-Württemberg , in addition to the practical semester of several months at a school, an additional social or company internship lasting several weeks must be completed. In addition, an ethical-philosophical basic course (EPG) is intended to expand the argumentation skills of future teachers.
