Federal Association of Music Education

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Bundesverband Musikunterricht ( BMU ) is a German association of people interested in music education in schools, second training phases and universities. He advocates the improvement of music teaching in general schools and the interests of music teachers (see: Music Education ).

About the association

The Federal Association of Music Lessons (BMU) was created in 2015 from the merger of the Working Group for School Music (AfS), which existed as an independent association from 1953 to 2015, and the Association of German School Musicians (VDS).

The BMU is committed to musical life and musical-artistic work in schools, especially the work of musical ensembles in schools.

The BMU also promotes qualified and adequate training for music teachers of all types, forms and levels of school. For example, it organizes advanced training courses and events at the state and federal level, which serve the advanced training of music teachers and the promotion of musical life in schools.

At the federal level, the BMU organizes the Federal Music Education Congress once a year. The fifth Federal Music Education Congress is to take place in Mannheim in September 2020.

The presidents of the BMU at federal level are Jürgen Oberschmidt and Michael Pabst-Krüger. Current and former honorary presidents are Karl Heinrich Ehrenforth (1929–2017), Hans Bäßler , Ortwin Nimczik and Jürgen Terhag .

Federal meeting and competitions

The BMU organizes the federal meeting "Schools making music", which gives schools the opportunity to perform and provide musical training for school ensembles (band, orchestra, choir, etc.). The BMU also organizes the national music class competition, which is intended to help improve the way children and adolescents use music.

In addition, he is also responsible for the federal competition "Practical School Piano Playing" (for student teachers) and other competitions that serve to further educate music teachers.

The BMU also awards the BMU Media Prize for innovative and music-pedagogically demanding media productions in the field of audiovisual media and cross-platform media including the Internet. This prize is intended to honor works that "open up access to music for children and young people in a particularly appealing way and have a music-pedagogical effect in a school context".

Cooperation at the state level

The projects at the federal level are supported by the BMU regional associations. For example, they hold regional and nationwide encounters within the framework of "schools make music".

The BMU is a partner of the Bavarian State Ministry for Education and Culture for its project "Bavarian Real School String Orchestra".
