Carl Bay
Carl Bay (born July 29, 1927 in Hamburg ; † July 16, 2014 there ) was a German opera singer (baritone) and actor .
Life
Carl Bay was the son of a painter from Pöseldorf . After singing as a member of the youth movement since 1941 , he experienced the end of the war as a young soldier. He later completed classical vocal training as a baritone and made guest appearances at various German opera houses until the early 1950s. At the same time, his radio career began in 1947 when he was heard for the first time in the Hamburg harbor concert in Cuxhaven . Bay then gave up his operatic career and switched to the maritime subject as the “salt water bard”, as he was often called, with shanty songs. For 60 years he remained loyal to the harbor concert with countless appearances. In addition, he drove as an entertainer on the ships of what was then the Hamburg-America Line (HAPAG) or played theater, e.g. B. in the 1975/76 season at the St. Pauli Theater in the play Berta, let that go .
In the 1950s, Carl Bay went on an American tour together with his colleague Lale Andersen , in 1973 he was the symbolic figure at the IGA in Hamburg as "Captain Flower" .
From 1963 onwards, Carl Bay became known to a broad television audience through his participation in almost all episodes of the ARD series Haifischbar . In addition, he appeared in a few other entertainment programs as a singer. His voice has also been preserved on numerous records. In the late 1960s, Bay took part in two Low German radio play productions on the NDR .
In addition, Carl Bay, together with Dirks Paulun and Hans Harbeck, co-founded the spiral staircase in Hamburg in 1946 , the oldest still existing literary cabaret in Germany, at which he also appeared regularly.
Carl Bay died just under two weeks before he would turn 87 and was buried anonymously in the Öjendorf cemetery in Hamburg .
