Hans Harbeck

Hans Harbeck (born December 15, 1887 in Eckernförde ; died May 18, 1968 in Hamburg ) was a German poet , essayist and cabaret artist .

Life

From 1906 Harbeck studied philosophy and art history in Göttingen , where he founded the student association German Academic Freischar together with Knud Ahlborn , a friend from the Hamburg hiking club , in 1907 , then in Munich and in Kiel , where he worked on the painter Melchior Lorichs in 1910 PhD.

From 1917 Harbeck began to write expressionist poetry. In 1918 he became a dramaturge and actor at the Hamburger Kammerspiele . In 1919 his first volume of poetry ( Revolution ) was published and from 1922 he worked as a freelance writer. He also appeared as a cabaret artist and emcee, including in the literary cabaret The Seven Sticklebacks in the Curiohaus .

In 1934 the National Socialists banned him from working , in 1944 he was arrested and was held in " protective custody " until 1945 . He reflected on the time in captivity in the volume of poems Verse aus dem prison in 1946 . In the same year, together with Carl Bay and Dirks Paulun , he founded the still existing literary cabaret Die Wendeltreppe in Hamburg , in which he also appeared regularly, and which was soon joined by the little-known Heinz Erhardt .

Harbeck was a prolific author of numerous volumes of poetry, mostly cheerful content, often with echoes of Christian Morgenstern and Joachim Ringelnatz , with whom he was friends. In addition to his lyrical works, he also wrote rhyming lexicons, travel guides and practical literature such as company and club chronicles and he was editor of the Almanac of the Hamburg Artists Festival for many years . He also translated Dickens and Maupassant and was editor of the writings of Carl Wolff and Gustav Sack .

Harbeck died in Hamburg in 1968 at the age of 81. His estate is in the Hamburg State and University Library .

Hans Harbeck was buried in the Ohlsdorf cemetery in Hamburg, grid square Q 10 (south of Chapel 1 ).
