Paul Raabe (born February 21, 1927 in Oldenburg ; † July 5, 2013 in Wolfenbüttel ) was a German literary scholar and librarian , according to FAZ "Germany's most famous librarian".

Life

After graduating from the Graf-Anton-Günther-Schule in Oldenburg, training as a qualified librarian at the Oldenburg State Library and studying German and history in Hamburg, he was head of the library of the German Literature Archive in Marbach from 1958 to 1968 , before he took over the management of the Herzog August Library in Wolfenbüttel in 1968 . Here he began to expand and open the library, which was the largest in Europe in the 17th century, into a modern, internationally recognized study and research facility for the Middle Ages and the early modern period . Among other things, a scholarship and research program, a publications department and a student program have been set up. Little by little, other buildings were incorporated into the library, so that a real library quarter was created.

As a librarian in Wolfenbüttel, Raabe succeeded Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz and Gotthold Ephraim Lessing . In 1987 he received honorary doctorates from the Jagiellonian University in Cracow and the Technical University of Braunschweig . In 1991 Raabe was made an honorary citizen of the city of Wolfenbüttel.

From 1992 to 2000 Raabe was director of the Francke Foundations in Halle (Saale) , member of the board of trustees of the Klassik Stiftung Weimar and of the Weimar '99 Board of Trustees .

In February 1997 he received an honorary doctorate from the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg , and on February 21, 2002 he was made honorary citizenship of the city of Halle (Saale). Raabe published numerous works on the history of books, libraries and sources, on the literature of Expressionism , the Enlightenment and Weimar Classics . He bequeathed his academic legacy to the Oldenburg State Library.

Paul Raabe was married to Mechthild Raabe, the sister of the writer Hans Egon Holthusen . He had four children, including Katharina , editor for Eastern European literature at Suhrkamp Verlag Berlin, and Christiane , director of the Munich International Youth Library. His sister Elisabeth Raabe is a literary scholar and publisher.

Paul Raabe died on July 5, 2013 in Wolfenbüttel after a stroke.
