Karl Philipp Christian Schönemann (born January 17, 1801 in Göttingen ; † September 8, 1855 in Wolfenbüttel ) was a German teacher, librarian and numismatist . From 1830 to 1854 he was the director of the Ducal Library in Wolfenbüttel, today's Herzog August Library .

Life

Karl Philipp Christian Schönemann was born as the son of the Göttingen professor Carl Traugott Gottlob Schönemann (1765–1802) and his wife Elisabeth Henriette (1777–1859), née Leiste. After the early death of the father, the mother moved to Wolfenbüttel, where her father Christian Leiste (1738–1815) was the principal of the large school . Schönemann grew up here and received his schooling first from his grandfather and then from his mother's brother. In 1819 he took a study of classical philology and theology at the University of Göttingen , where he u. a. with Georg Ludolf Dissen andKarl Otfried Müller studied and received his doctorate in philosophy in 1823 . He then went to Wolfenbüttel as a grammar school teacher and in 1829 moved to the Julianum grammar school in Helmstedt as vice-principal . In 1830 he was finally appointed to the ducal library in Wolfenbüttel. As head of the library, he managed to increase its meager acquisition budget by selling duplicates . He wrote u. a. Works on the history of the library and numismatics . Since 1844 he suffered from an eye disease that made him increasingly blind. He retired in 1854 and died of cholera the following year .

Schönemann was married twice: in 1830 he married Henriette Pauline Charlotte Leiste (1808–1845), daughter of the preacher Christian Ludwig Leiste , who was largely related to him, and granddaughter of the theologian Johann August Nösselt . In 1851 he married Julie Römer (1799– around 1877), daughter of the consistorial councilor Jacob Ludwig Römer (1770–1855), who, like her father, has occasionally emerged poetically. A daughter and two sons of his children survived, the eldest of whom, Anton Wilhelm Otto Schönemann (1833–1855), also fell victim to cholera a few days after him.
