life and work

Zimmermann was the son of the later Senate President of the Braunschweig Higher Regional Court Rudolf Zimmermann († 1890) and his wife Luise Bode, the daughter of the judge in Braunschweig Wilhelm Bode . After graduating from high school in Wolfenbüttel , he studied history and philology in Leipzig , Munich and Heidelberg . In 1876 the doctor of history took up his first position at the State Main Archives in Wolfenbüttel. In 1890 he was appointed director of Karl von Schmidt-Phiseldeck as successor and in 1908 he was appointed secret archivist . In 1914 he was elected a corresponding member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences . In 1920 and 1926/27 he was managing director of the Herzog August Library in Wolfenbüttel.

Zimmermann married on August 28, 1880 with Martha Pfaff, the daughter of the district judge in Wolfenbüttel Erich Pfaff. There are children from the marriage. Of these, one knows the daughter Gertrud Zimmermann (* August 19, 1881), the son Rudolf Zimmermann (* March 13, 1884), the son Ernst Heinrich Zimmermann (1886–1971) and the daughter Helene Zimmermann (* November 14, 1891) .

Zimmermann's merits lie in working out the history of the city and country of Braunschweig . He was the editor and collaborator of various writings and publications on the history of the city and country of Braunschweig, such as the Braunschweigischer Magazin , the yearbook of the History Association for the Duchy of Braunschweig and the yearbook of the Braunschweigisches Geschichtsverein . Among other things, he has written various biographies for the Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie .

Paul Zimmermann was a member of the clothing seller . He maintained a variety of contacts, for example with the humorous poet Wilhelm Busch , who often stayed in his vacation home in Wolfenbüttel. Zimmermann is buried in the Wolfenbüttel main cemetery. His extensive estate includes, among other things, collections on the biographies of Brunswick personalities and is in the Wolfenbüttel State Archives .

A plaque on his Wolfenbüttel house, the late baroque house Stadtmarkt 15, commemorates Paul Zimmermann.
