Hermann Voges (born November 14, 1880 in Wolfenbüttel , † November 27, 1940 in Wolfenbüttel) was a German historian and archivist . From 1924 to 1938 he was director of the State Main Archives Wolfenbüttel .

life and work

The son of the teacher and local researcher Theodor Voges attended the large school in Wolfenbüttel. He studied history, historical auxiliary sciences and German in Heidelberg and Göttingen . In Göttingen, the historians Otto Krauske and Max Lehmann were among his teachers. Voges was 1903 with the military science work contributions to the history of the campaign of 1715 against Charles XII. from Sweden to Dr. phil. PhD. He passed the state examination in 1904, switched to teaching and in 1908 became a senior teacher at the Progymnasium in Bad Harzburg . In 1909 he took up the newly established position of the second scientific official at the Wolfenbüttel State Main Archives. In 1910 he was appointed to the newly founded Lower Saxony Historical Commission . From 1914 to 1918 Voges took part in the First World War , since 1917 as a captain .

Voges became archive director in 1924, succeeding Paul Zimmermann . In the same year he became chairman of the Braunschweigischer Geschichtsverein . During the directorate of his predecessor Zimmermann, the archives in Wolfenbüttel had grown significantly. Voges' activity was therefore characterized by a constant lack of warehouse space and staff. Under the National Socialists, he was exposed to accusations from among his employees that he had reservations about Arierism and that he was protecting a Jew. He was rehabilitated in lengthy examinations, but had fallen out of favor with Prime Minister Dietrich Klagges and his health was severely impaired, so that he applied for retirement in autumn 1938. In the same year he had to give up the chairmanship of the Braunschweigischer Geschichtsverein.

In the foreground of his scientific work is the military history of the 17th and 18th centuries, often in connection with topographical studies.

Voges had been married to Käthe Brandes, daughter of the Wolfenbüttel classical philologist Wilhelm Brandes , since 1908 . The marriage resulted in a son and two daughters.
