Wilhelm Brandes (born July 21, 1854 in Braunlage ; † February 6, 1928 in Wolfenbüttel ) was a German writer and classical philologist. He was a close friend and biographer of Wilhelm Raabe .

Life

The son of a Harz district forester visited the Martino-Katharineum in Braunschweig from 1864 . He studied from 1872 at the University of Göttingen classical philology and in 1876 at the Leipzig University Dr. phil. PhD. He then taught at his old school in Braunschweig and also read about German literature between 1889 and 1896 at the TH Braunschweig .

In the early 1880s, Brandes met the poet Wilhelm Raabe , who had lived in Braunschweig since 1870 , and became his friend and confidante. In the sociable circle of clothing sellers that gathered around Raabe, he acted as "Bard Brandanus" with the performance of humorous ballads.

In 1893 Brandes became head of the high school in Wolfenbüttel, where he continued to have close contact with Raabe. Brandes gave the commemorative speech at his funeral in 1910. In 1911 he founded the “Society of Friends of Wilhelm Raabe” together with several Brunswick dignitaries. Brandes retired in 1921 and died in Wolfenbüttel in 1928. His daughter Käthe was married to the Wolfenbüttel historian and archive director Hermann Voges .

A street in Wolfenbüttel is named after him. In the Bremerhaven district of Geestemünde , near the Wilhelm Raabe School, a street was also named after Brandes.
