The Braunschweigischer Geschichtsverein was founded on May 6, 1901 as the "History Association for the Duchy of Braunschweig" . Today it has over 550 members. The aim of the association is to promote historical awareness and a regional identity in today's region between Harz and Heide and Harz and Weser.

history

On May 6, 1901, a branch association of the Harz History Association, namely the local association for history and antiquity for Braunschweig and Wolfenbüttel, founded the "History Association for the Duchy of Braunschweig" .

The association already had 260 members when it was founded. Among them were the then Secret Archives Council and first chairman of the newly formed association Paul Zimmermann from Wolfenbüttel , the Brunswick city archivist and secretary of the Heinrich Mack association and Paul Jonas Meier , director of the Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum .

Today there is a close cooperation with the historical seminar and the historical commission for Lower Saxony and Bremen .

The first chairman of the association is Brage Bei der Wieden , head of the Lower Saxony State Archives - Wolfenbüttel location , other board members are: Walter Hagena, Sascha Köckeritz and Werner Arnold. Honorary members are: Richard Moderhack †, Günter Scheel †, Manfred RW Garzmann and Horst-Rüdiger Jarck . Members of the advisory board are: Annette Boldt-Stülzebach, Hans-Henning Grote, Christian Lippelt, Jochen Luckhardt , Henning Steinführer , Heike Pöppelmann , Thomas Scharff and Cecilie Hollberg . The honorary advisory board is formed by: Manfred RW Garzmann, Dieter Lent , Wolfgang Milde †, Gerhard Schildt , Gerd Spies , Klaus Webendoerfer † and Mechthild Wiswe †.

The association is the publisher of various, sometimes regularly appearing publications on the regional and home history of the area between the Harz , Lüneburg Heath and Weser , such as the Braunschweigischer Magazin and the Braunschweigischer Jahrbuch , which has been published since 1902 (Volumes 1 to 14 under the title Yearbook of the History Association for the Duchy of Braunschweig ) or the sources and research on Braunschweig national history .
