Thomas Scharff (historian)

Thomas Scharff (born October 5, 1963 in Uelzen ) is a German historian of medieval history.

Thomas Scharff studied Protestant theology in Oberursel in 1984/85 and from 1985 to 1992 in Münster the subjects of Middle and Ancient History, Egyptology and Philosophy. In 1992 he did his doctorate with Hagen Keller on the subject of persecuting heretics and writing. The effect of the heretic laws on the northern Italian municipal statutes in the 13th century . From 1994 to 2003 Scharff was assistant and senior assistant at the historical seminar in Münster. In 2000 his habilitation took place with the thesis The Struggles of Rulers and Saints. War and historical memory in the Carolingian era . He has been Professor of Medieval History in Braunschweig since 2003 .

His main research interests are heresy and the inquisition , medieval literary culture , historiography in the early Middle Ages, the forms and representation of medieval royal rule and the reception of the Middle Ages in modern times.
