Karakaşlar

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Karakaşlar ( Turkish ) or Konyosos ( Ladino ) are next to the Izmirim (Izmirlis) and Yakubiler (Jacobites) one of the three Jewish Dönme (Apostate) sects. It emerged from this movement at the beginning of the 18th century. They are characterized by great secrecy. The leader of this neo-Sabbatian movement, which is close to Islam , was Baruchja Russo, 1677-1720, who came from a Jewish family that was one of the early followers of Shabbtai Zvi . His followers regarded him as the reincarnation of Shabbtai Zvi, since 1716 as a divine incarnation, after his conversion to Islam he was called "Osman Baba". Representatives of the sect were sent to Poland, Germany and Austria, where they caused a considerable stir in the years 1720-1726. The number of its members is estimated at several hundred to several thousand. The Frankists later split off from this movement.
