Heinrich Mack (born January 27, 1867 in Braunschweig , † September 18, 1945 in Halberstadt ) was a German historian and director of the Braunschweig City Archives and the City Library .

Life

The son of the senior teacher Robert Mack, who came from an old Brunswick family, and his wife Elisabeth Grégoire attended the Martino-Katharineum until 1885 . He studied history, classical philology and geography at the Universities of Heidelberg and Berlin, where he was awarded a Dr. phil. received his doctorate.

From New Year 1891 he successfully completed the legally required probationary year at the Ducal New Gymnasium in Braunschweig and then taught there temporarily until August 16, 1892 to teach. Mack had been working on an inventory of the Hanseatic records of the 16th and 17th centuries in the Braunschweig city archive since 1890 and ended his teaching career at Easter 1895 to join the city as an assistant archivist. After being promoted to archivist in 1899, he succeeded Hänselmann in 1904 as director of the city archive and library. In 1910 the city archives and the city library moved to the new building on Steintorwall, which was built by the city master builder Osterloh . In the same year Mack received the title of professor from the regent Johann Albrecht zu Mecklenburg . In 1934 he retired.

Mack had been married to Elisabeth Wedde since 1912, with whom he had three children, including Dietrich Mack , long-time director of the Braunschweig Wilhelm-Gymnasium.

Heinrich-Mack-Straße in downtown Braunschweig has been named after him since 1968.
