The Planggenstock is the northernmost peak in the canton of Glarus in Switzerland and stands a good 1200 meters above the Lint plain with the town of Bilten , which has been part of the unified municipality of Glarus Nord since 2010 , and whose former municipality also included the northern slope.
The summit and the ridge running to the east against the Hirzli are made of Nagelfluh rock. This rock continues on the eastern side of the Lin Plain on Mount Speer .
To the south, the flank falls on the former municipality of Niederurnen into the Niederurner Valley. The Niederurnen-Morgenholz aerial cableway , which was built in 1965 primarily for school children from the farms in the Niederurnertal, leads into this valley to Morgenholz . This railway also makes it easier for hikers to get to the Niederurnertal and the Planggenstock or to the Hirzli to the east .
