Richard Moderhack

Richard Moderhack (born October 14, 1907 in Berlin ; † July 14, 2010 in Braunschweig ) was a German historian and was director of the Braunschweig City Archives and City Library from 1956 to 1970 .

Life

Moderhack comes from a family of craftsmen in Brandenburg , his father was a blacksmith . In 1927, after graduating from high school , he began studying history, German, English and philosophy at Berlin's Friedrich Wilhelm University . In 1932 Moderhack received his doctorate on The Older History of the City of Calau in Niederlausitz . As a member of the Institute for Archival Science he came to the Prussian Secret State Archives in Berlin-Dahlem . During the Second World War he was a soldier in France from 1940 to 1945, where he worked as a translator , among other things , in the Soviet Union and the Baltic States , where he was seriously wounded in Courland and was taken prisoner by the English towards the end of the war .

On November 1, 1945, Moderhack took up a position at the city archive and at the city library in Braunschweig . In 1946 he was on the founding board of the Association of German Archivists (VdA). In 1947 he became a member of the Historical Commission for Lower Saxony and Bremen . On March 1, 1956, he was appointed Werner Spieß 's successor in the position of director of both Braunschweig institutions and held this position until his retirement in 1970. During this time he reorganized the city archive and ensured that the war-related repatriation and reintegration was swift archived holdings in Braunschweig.

In 1963 he founded the Association of Lower Saxony Municipal Archivists (ANKA), of which he was director until 1970. In 1964 he became a member of the Family Studies Commission for Lower Saxony and Bremen as well as neighboring East Westphalian areas . In 1966 Moderhack also became director of the Braunschweig public library.

In 1970 he was awarded the Cross of Merit 1st Class of the Lower Saxony Order of Merit when he retired . The City of Braunschweig awarded Moderhack 1988, the Public Service Medal for outstanding service to the promotion of the welfare of the citizens of the city . In addition, he is an honorary member of the Braunschweigischer Geschichtsverein , of which he was managing director for 17 years.

With over 200 scientific publications, including numerous that came after his retirement, Moderhack is considered a prolific scientist and author. His books are among the standard works on the history of the city and country of Braunschweig .

Dietrich and Richard Moderhack Foundation

At the end of 2002 Moderhack set up a foundation endowed with 125,000 euros , which bears his name and whose aim is to support research on the history of Lower Saxony . The beneficiary is the Historical Commission for Lower Saxony and Bremen, which has also taken on the fiduciary management. It is also named after his son the chemist Dietrich Moderhack .
