Werner Spieß

Werner Spieß (born February 5, 1891 in Düsseldorf , † December 7, 1972 in Braunschweig ) was a German historian and archivist . From 1935 to 1956 he was in charge of the city ​​archive and the city ​​library of Braunschweig .

Life

From 1910 Spieß studied law at the universities of Munich , Freiburg , Berlin and Göttingen . In 1916 he was promoted to Dr. jur. and at the University of Marburg in 1923 as Dr. phil. PhD. He worked at various Prussian state archives before becoming a scientific official at the Braunschweig City Archives on January 1, 1928. On July 1, 1935, Spieß was appointed director of the City Archives and City Library as Heinrich Mack's successor . In 1943 he completed his habilitation at the University of Göttingen. During the Second World War , between 1942 and 1944, he was responsible for the relocation of a large part of the archive material, which saved it from destruction. The Nazis deprived him on 27 November 1944, the management of the two institutions before it was used on 9 July 1945 by the British occupation again as director. In 1947 he received an honorary professorship for constitutional and economic history at the Technical University of Braunschweig . In 1956 he retired. Richard Moderhack was his successor as director of the City Archives and City Library . Spieß was chairman of the Braunschweig Historical Society for several years . He died in Braunschweig in 1972.

Spieß rearranged the city's archives. The relocation and rescue of the archive holdings during the Second World War is particularly commendable. He wrote several works on the history of the city and the state of Braunschweig:
