from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

History of the city of Braunschweig in the post-Middle Ages is the title of a two-part work on the history of the city of Braunschweig , which was published in 1966 by Werner Spieß . It continues the work History of the City of Braunschweig in the Middle Ages published by Hermann Dürre in 1861 on the occasion of the city's millennium .

Background and content

Werner Spieß wanted to continue the development of the historical events of the city of Braunschweig beyond the Middle Ages , as he lamented the lot of many larger city chronicles, whose history volumes almost ended with the end of the Middle Ages. Therefore, he dealt with the research of the problems of urban development from the end of the late Middle Ages to the modern age, more precisely with the period from 1491 to 1671, the end of urban freedom . Here, Spieß came to terms with his work in the Braunschweig city archive .

Content 1st half volume
The first half-volume contains in the first part the “general and political history” in the 5 chapters “from the Middle Ages to the post-Middle Ages” (1491 to 1523), “the age of the Reformation” (1521 to 1549), “the city's after-bloom” (1548 to 1583), “decline under internal and external tremors” (1584 to 1617) and “the last years of the autonomous city” (1616 to 1671).
The second part deals with the "economic and social history" and here in particular with the chapter "handicraft" of the food, textile, metal and construction trades. The volume comprises a total of 353 pages and a double-sided city map from 1671 with a legend .
Content 2nd half volume
The 2nd half volume continues the 2nd part on "Economic and Social History" with the chapters on "Trade" and the "Social Order of the City".
The third part gives an overview of the "topography, constitution and administration, church and school as well as spiritual life". The volume has 421 pages including a double-sided map showing the city of Braunschweig in the middle of the surrounding territories during this period. The individual territories ( Duchy of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel , Duchy of Braunschweig-Lüneburg and the small and large Hildesheim monasteries ) are color-coded.
