After completing his thesis, Ludewig began the teaching traineeship , but was already working as an assistant at the Chair of Modern History at the University of Munich. After the end of the two-year traineeship, he decided against a teaching career and in 1972 took a position as a research assistant at the history seminar of the TU Braunschweig. There he worked as a teacher in the high school system and was a member of the Academic Council. He also received his doctorate there in 1975 with a thesis on the history of the labor movement in the Weimar Republic . In 2000 he was appointed Academic Director.

In addition to his work in seminars and courses for students, Ludewig devoted himself to research on Germany in the 19th and 20th centuries, in particular the labor movement and the judiciary during the Nazi era . Another focus is the regional history of Braunschweig and the surrounding area. After Ludewig retired in 2008, the library of the historical seminar was renamed the Hans-Ulrich Ludewig Library (HULB) in his honor.
