Gustav Milchsack (born January 7, 1850 in Nümbrecht , † December 28, 1919 in Wolfenbüttel ) was a German librarian , Germanist and early printing researcher . From 1904 to 1919 he was director of the Herzog August Library in Wolfenbüttel.

Life

The milk bag, who came from a merchant family, graduated from the Laurentianum in Warendorf in 1871 . From 1871 to 1876 he studied German and modern languages ​​in Berlin , Bonn and Leipzig .

After receiving his doctorate in Leipzig in 1876, he went to the Wolfenbüttel Herzog August Library as a research assistant, which was headed by Otto von Heinemann . In 1879, Milchsack became library secretary and in 1884 librarian, before receiving the title of professor in 1899. On October 1, 1904, he succeeded Heinemann as director of the Herzog August Library.

His scientific work deals with religious games of the Middle Ages as well as studies on the Faust saga . His work on the history of book printing is significant.

Milchsack was a member of the sociable association of honest clothing sellers in Braunschweig .
