Leonhart Schröter

Leonhart Schröter (also Leonhard Schröterus ; * probably 1532 in Torgau ; † probably 1601 in Magdeburg ) was a German composer and Lutheran cantor .

Life

He attended the Princely School in Meißen from 1545 to 1547 . He then worked from 1561 to 1576 as city cantor in Saalfeld . During this time he was also from about December 1571 to November 1572 the first librarian under Duke Julius of Braunschweig-Lüneburg (1528–1569) at his library in Wolfenbüttel . In 1576 Schröter switched to the Altstädter Latin School in Magdeburg as cantor, where he remained until his retirement in 1595.

Works

As a composer of Protestant church music, Schröter published several collections of choral works, including:

  • 55 sacred songs for Protestant singing with 4 to 7 voices. Wittenberg 1562.
  • a Tadeum (1576).
  • Two parts “Cantiones suavissimae quator vocis”. Erfurt 1576 and 1580.
  • a score "New Christmas Song". Helmstedt 1586/87.
  • Hymn sacri. Erfurt 1587.
