Thomas Mancinus also Thomas Menckin (* 1550 in Schwerin ; † around 1612 there ) was a German composer and court conductor .

Life

After attending Latin school, Thomas Mancinus enrolled at the University of Rostock in 1567 . Thomas Mancinus was hired in January 1572 by Duke Johann Albrecht von Mecklenburg-Schwerin as school cantor and in the following year as the successor to Johannes Flamingus as Kapellmeister of today's Staatskapelle Schwerin . In February 1576 Duke Ulrich appointed him to Güstrow as composer and conductor . From 1579 to 1581 Mancinus was tenor in the court orchestra in Berlin. In 1583 at the latest he entered the service of the Bishop of Halberstadt, who would later become Duke Heinrich Julius of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel , who resided in Gröningen . In December 1583 he was appointed Kapellmeister, and he held this position in Wolfenbüttel until 1604. Under his leadership, the court orchestra expanded from eight to 17 members by 1590, plus 12 trumpeters and timpanists. Mancinu's two sons were also members of the court orchestra. Mancinus was replaced in 1604 by Michael Praetorius . From 1604 Mancinus administered the Duke's library, today's Duke August Library .
