Heinrich Schneider (Librarian)

Heinrich Schneider (born April 30, 1889 in Offenbach am Main , † June 3, 1972 in California ) was an American librarian and Germanist of German origin.

Life

Heinrich Schneider, son of teacher Heinrich Christian Schneider and Lina nee Rohn, devoted himself to put- graduate studies of theology , German literature and historical studies at the Universities of Tuebingen , Leipzig and casting , which he in 1911 with the acquisition of the academic degree of Dr. phil. and graduated in 1912 with the examination for the higher teaching post. He became a candidate for higher library service in Gießen in 1912 and assistant librarian at the university library in 1914, after serving in the First World War in 1920 he was a librarian; at the same time he received a teaching position in history. In 1921 he moved to the Herzog August Library in Wolfenbüttel, where he was appointed acting director in 1923. In 1926 Schneider accepted a call as senior librarian and library councilor at the Lübeck City Library , where he became first library councilor and deputy director in 1930.

After Heinrich Schneider and the library director Willy Pieth were on leave in March 1933 for political reasons and then dismissed at the beginning of July , he first emigrated to Sofia , taught as a visiting professor at the American College until he moved to the USA in 1936, where he worked until his In 1955 he retired and taught at Harvard University in Cambridge , among others . Schneider - he died in California in 1972 at the age of 83 - is one of the most important Lessing researchers of his time.

In 1953 Schneider was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
