Light Years is the seventh studio album by Australian pop singer Kylie Minogue . It was released in September 2000.

history

After the comparatively unsuccessful album Impossible Princess , Minogue's record deal with the Deconstruction Records label had expired, whereupon she switched to Parlophone and began working on new songs in 1999. On Light Years she then combined dance pop with disco and house music. In addition, Europop bonds were used.

The album marked Kylie Minogue's return to the mainstream and heralded her comeback and rise to become a globally recognized artist. The lead single Spinning Around , which also uses disco elements, played a key role in this. The song was u. a. written by Paula Abdul , who wanted to record him for a comeback album herself. However, since this album never came off, Parlophone eventually offered the song to Kylie Minogue. Although Minogue had neither co-wrote the song, nor was the song written specifically for her, the text applied to the course of her career so far. Supported by a video that the singer staged in a media-effective manner, the first single was an instant hit and reached number 1 in the UK charts. Kylie Minogue returned to media interest.

The second single, On a Night Like This , was also a success, reaching number 2 in the UK. Minogue played the song live during the closing ceremony of the 2000 Summer Olympics in their native Australia.

Just one month after On a Night Like This was released, the third single Kids was released , a duet with the then hugely successful singer Robbie Williams . It was also the second release from Williams' studio album Sing When You're Winning . Williams co-wrote the song with Guy Chambers for Kylie Minogue. He liked the result so much that he rewrote the song as a duet, recorded the song with Minogue and also released it on his own next album. The text contains several allusions to the careers of the two singers. Williams album Sing when you're winning contains, in contrast to Light Years, a slightly modified version that contains a rap by Williams.

Together with Kylie Minogue, Robbie Williams and Guy Chambers wrote two more songs, Loveboat and Your Disco Needs You , which were released on the album. Your Disco Needs You was only released as a single in Germany and Australia and is considered a great success in the gay scene. On the German version of Light Years there is an additional version of Your Disco Needs You , on which Minogue says a few sentences in German.

In addition to the compositions published for the first time on this album, Kylie Minogue also recorded the cover version of the song Under the Influence of Love by Barry White . Other notable songs include Please Stay , which contains Latin elements, and Bittersweet Goodbye , the only ballad on the album, as well as Butterfly , with a significant influence from techno music .

Success and criticism

The album received pretty good reviews in general. Allmusic's Chris True described the album as "one of the best disco records since the 1970s". He awarded four out of five stars. The Digital Spy site awarded five out of five stars. It is not a failure on the album. The album reached number two in the UK and number 35 in Germany . It could not find a place in the USA .
