X is the tenth studio album by Australian pop singer Kylie Minogue . It is Minogue's first studio album since she contracted breast cancer in May 2005.

background

Kylie Minogue sings the song Speakerphone during the KylieX2008 tour in Sofia (2008)
Kylie Minogue sings the song No More Rain during her KylieX2008 tour in Berlin (2008)

For the recordings of her tenth studio album, Kylie Minogue worked not only with familiar producers such as Cathy Dennis and Guy Chambers but also with numerous British artists from the field of electronic dance music , including Groove Armada , Mylo and Calvin Harris . However, of the more than 40 demo recordings only 13 songs found their way onto the regular album, which means that collaborations with Groove Armada, Mylo and the Scissor Sisters were not officially released. Minogue herself was involved in a total of seven songs as a composer. Three songs from the album, In My Arms , Stars and Sensitized , appeared illegally on the Internet in May 2007, along with other demos.

For promotional purposes, Minogue produced The Kylie Show , which aired on UK TV in November 2007. Since May 2008 Kylie Minogue presents her tenth studio album on the KylieX2008 tour. For the first time she is also performing live in South America.

Style and reception

Except for the pre-release 2 Hearts , which impresses with glam rock influences, and the ballads No more Rain and Cosmic , the majority of X is mainly danceable pop music . Sensitized , however, is based on a sample of the song Bonnie and Clyde by Serge Gainsbourg . The style of the song All I See is, like many pieces of its predecessor Body Language , influenced by contemporary R'n'B .

Sales of X , however, fell short of expectations. Minogue herself admitted to the British newspaper The Sun that she was rather dissatisfied with her album X : "In retrospect we could definitely have done it better - I'll just say that frankly. Wow , 2 Hearts and In My Arms are crazy - they go off like a frog in a sock. But when you consider the time we've had, it is what it is. "

Awards

For X , Minogue received a BRIT Awards nomination in the International Album category . At the 43rd award of the Golden Camera , Minogue for X received international awards in the music category. The jury's justification states: "" X "- fast, clear, tough and pure - marks the entry into a new phase of life, a more conscious one, in which the Australian can finally determine her own strengths. The woman, who has been the epitome of pop music since the 1980s, has transformed once again in her long career. It is certainly the most important and the most mature transformation. This was the only way she could make this brilliant comeback. "

To the album title

Initially the album should be called "Magnetic Electric". Fans who talked about the album before it was officially released simply called it "X". Kylie Minogue found this appropriate and ended up naming the album that way. In addition, the letter "X" is also the Roman number for "10", which is the reference to the fact that "X" is the tenth studio album by the singers.

With number 35 in the Australian singles charts, In My Arms is one of the weakest single releases in the singer's career, which was released in Australia; only Finer Feelings (1992), GBI: German Bold Italic (1997) and Cowboy Style (1998) achieved even worse placements.
