Jake Shears (* 3. October 1978 in Mesa , Arizona , as Jason Sellards ) is the lead singer of the Scissor Sisters .

biography

Jake Shears was born in Arizona , but grew up on San Juan Island and in Seattle , Washington state , and attended high school there. He was then trained at the free art school "Occidental College" in Los Angeles , before he traveled to Lexington at the age of 19 to a school acquaintance and there he met his future bandmate Scott Hoffman (Babydaddy). A year later they both moved to New York.

In New York he studied writing at Eugene Lang College and wrote texts for music and gay magazines.

Shears and Hoffman founded the Scissor Sisters in 2001 and performed as performance artists in the city's relevant electro-pop clubs. The initial regional success was mainly due to the homo / bisexual and transgender scene. In 2004, the great international breakthrough came in Great Britain and Ireland . Her debut album Scissor Sisters was named the best-selling CD of the year in the UK and won numerous BRIT awards. Despite the number 1 hit I Don't Feel like Dancin ' (2006) and intensive promotion and tour, there was no great success in Germany . Nevertheless, they also received prizes in Germany, such as the Bambi for best newcomer.

From January to February 2020, Shears took part as Unicorn in the first season of the British version of The Masked Singer , in which he reached the sixth of twelve places.

Music genre

It can best be understood as a mixture of pop , glam rock and alternative . Shears mainly uses influences from ABBA , David Bowie , Duran Duran , Roxy Music , The New York Dolls , Queen , Madonna and Dolly Parton . The song passages sung by him in falsetto are striking .
