Paula Julie Abdul (* 19th June 1962 in San Fernando , California ) is an American choreographer and pop - singer and Grammy - and Emmy -Preisträgerin.

Abdul is the daughter of the Canadian concert pianist Lorraine Rykiss and the Syrian - Sephardic cattle dealer Harry Abdul, who lives in Brazil , who married in Winnipeg in 1952 . Harry Abdul worked in the sand and gravel trade for his wife's family. Lorraine Abdul was at times assistant director to Billy Wilder . Paula Abdul's sister Wendy was born in 1955. The parents divorced in 1969, from then on the children lived with their mother and saw their father on weekends.
Abdul has been married twice but has no children. On April 29, 1992 she married the actor Emilio Estevez , the marriage was divorced on May 10, 1994. Abdul was married for the second time on October 24, 1996, but his marriage to Brad Beckerman did not last long, and the couple divorced in 1999.
Career
It was in Van Nuys High School that Abdul had her first experience as a cheerleader . As a teenager , she struggled with bulimia , which continued to cause problems later in life. At the age of 16 she made her first appearance on the television show Junior High School . After graduating from high school in 1980, the Juilliard School of Performing Arts in New York City offered her dance lessons , but she declined. Instead, she began studying broadcast radio and TV at California State Northridge College. Two years later, Abdul joined the Los Angeles Lakers cheerleaders and later became the group's coach. In 1984 she choreographed the video for Torture of the Jacksons , which was very beneficial to her career.
From then on, Abdul was a sought-after choreographer for stage shows and video clips. She worked for Janet Jackson , Toto and Mick Jagger , among others .
In May 1988, their first single, Knocked Out , was released, which peaked at number 41 on the Billboard Hot 100 . Their most commercially successful single, Straight Up , was released in November 1988. A little later, the album Forever Your Girl followed with 19.5 million copies sold worldwide to date. Four of the released singles reached number 1 in the US charts, and a total of 13 singles were placed in the Hot 100. Abdul received two Emmys for Outstanding Achievement in Choreography , choreographing the Tracey Ullman Show in 1989 and choreographing the 17th Annual American Music Awards in 1990 . In 1988 she was nominated for an Emmy. Further nominations followed from 2003 to 2007 for American Idol .
During her active time as a musician, she completed two tours. In the fall of 1989 the so-called Club MTV Package Tour through the USA and in 1991/92 their own world tour Under My Spell .
In 1999, Abdul was one of nine songwriters for singer Kylie Minogue to write the track Spinning Around . Between 2002 and 2009 she was a juror on the television program American Idol . Since 2004, Abdul has been marketing her jewelry collection under the name Innergy . In December of the same year, she was fined $ 1,075 and sentenced to two years suspended prison sentence for hit and miss. In 2007, Abdul was on her own reality show called Hey Paula! seen on TV.
In 2009, Abdul released Rah! For her MTV show . the song Boombox , the cover version of a previously unreleased song by Minogue (a remix of the song can be heard on Minogue's remix album Boombox ).
