The Tracey Ullman Show is one of 1,987 produced to 1990 US Comedy - TV Program of the actress and singer Tracey Ullman . The animated series The Simpsons emerged from the show , which has been one of the top ratings hits of the US television channel Fox for three decades .

The show and its concept

The show was conceived by producer James L. Brooks around Tracey Ullman. Ullman, British actress and singer, was well known in Great Britain, had appeared on television there and had a number of hits as a singer. She also landed in the top ten with a song in the USA. Brooks had produced television programs in the 1970s (including Mary Tyler Moore ), and in the meantime he had turned to cinema. To do a comedy show with Ullman, he returned to television and started the production company Gracie Films . The show was co-produced with 20th Century Fox Television .

The basic concept of the show was sketch comedy paired with musical elements, sometimes cartoons were incorporated. The program usually began with a short speech by Ullman, followed by the opening credits. In the following skits, Ullman was often heavily disguised and spoke with different accents, there were some recurring characters. The last sketch of the show usually included a dance number, the show then ended with another monologue by Ullman, which she called Go home! (German: Go home! ) ended.

The show started in 1987 and ran weekly until 1990 for a total of four seasons on Fox . After the Tracey Ullman Show , Ullman designed and carried three more long-term shows: From 1996 to 1999, Tracey Takes On… was produced, from 2008 to 2010 State of the Union and since 2015 Tracey Ullman's Show , with the difference that this was her first show for British television is.

Cartoon short films

A total of two animated short film series were integrated into the show. Typically, the short films were divided into three to four acts and shown before and after the commercial breaks for the show.

In the first broadcast on April 5, 1987, the figure of Dr. NǃGodatu introduced. The shorts were drawn by M. K. Brown and animated by the Klasky Csupo team , a company that also produces other cartoon series. Soon after, also in April 1987, The Simpsons made their debut.

Matt Groening , creator of the Simpsons, was invited back in 1985 by James L. Brooks to come up with an idea for television cartoons. Groening had previously only drawn comic strips for newspapers. Initially, the question was whether to adapt his Strip Life in Hell for television. Since this would have been accompanied by the transfer of the rights to the strip to Fox , Brooks and Groening agreed that there would be new characters. Allegedly, Groening then invented the dysfunctional yellow family in Brooks' office within just 15 minutes, based at least on first names on his own relatives.

These two strips were shown more or less alternately during the first season of the show. From the second season, however, Brown's doctorate was discontinued, as the Simpsons now enjoyed a much greater popularity with the audience. From the fourth season of the show, which was broadcast from the fall of 1989, the Simpsons were no longer represented with new shorts, as they now had their own half-hour show on Fox .
