The song was released as a single on June 9, 1989 in USA. It became a number one hit in the United States , Canada , New Zealand , Switzerland, and Norway . It is 6:13 minutes long (the single version 4:06 minutes) and appeared on the soundtrack of the movie Batman . The song 200 Balloons can be heard on the B side of the single .

Prince originally composed Dance with the Devil for the Batman album , but ultimately decided to put Batdance on the album. In terms of design, the song is two songs in a chaotic, mechanical dance beat with funk elements. It also contains samples of Neal Hefti's Batman Theme from 1966.

Batdance can also be found on the Prince compilation 4Ever (2016).

Albert Magnoli directed the music video . In the video, Prince appears both himself and in the form of a villain, and you can also see dancers dressed like the characters Batman , Joker and Vicky Vale. Paula Abdul was the choreographic director .
