Karl Justus Wilhelm von Schmidt-Phiseldeck (born April 4, 1835 in Wolfenbüttel , † October 11, 1895 in Braunschweig ) was a German lawyer and archivist .

Life

Karl von Schmidt-Phiseldeck was born in Wolfenbüttel as the son of Justus von Schmidt-Phiseldeck (1803-1856), a regional court assessor, and Helene (née Jacobi, 1811-1861). There he attended public school and until 1853 the high school, then he studied in Göttingen law . On November 1, 1856, he successfully passed the first legal examination in Wolfenbüttel. Since his father died shortly afterwards on November 5th and left behind six underage daughters (born between 1836 and 1852), he took responsibility for them, especially after his mother's death on November 11th, 1861.

After Schmidt-Phiseldeck had passed the second legal exam on July 20, 1861, he worked in the Wolfenbüttel State Archives . He was appointed archives secretary on January 1, 1865, and became head of the archives in 1879. From 1875 on he was the President of the Consistory of the Braunschweigische Landeskirche . In May 1890 he gave up the post on the board of directors of the state main archives and resigned in the autumn of 1893 from the state assembly , to which he had been a member since 1878/79, and in March 1895 from the city ​​council .

Private life

Since Schmidt-Phiseldeck's health deteriorated considerably in 1895 as a result of a bladder problem, he sought medical treatment in the ducal hospital in Braunschweig, but died on October 11th of this year. He was buried on October 14th in Wolfenbüttel and left behind a wife Helene (née Görtz), with whom he had been married since May 2nd, 1865, two sons and two daughters.
