Life

Schönemann studied philology and law at the University of Göttingen with a focus on canon law and, out of personal inclination, historical geography. In 1787 and 1788 he received the suspended prices for geographical determinations of places in the Greek world of legends. In 1795 he became secretary and in 1797 curator of the university library . With a dissertation on issues of concordat law , he received his doctorate iuris utriusque . In the same year he completed his habilitation with a thesis on statistics. In 1799 he became associate professor at the University of Göttingen.

In 1800 he married Elisabeth Henriette Leiste (1777-1859), daughter of the Wolfenbüttel rector Christian Leiste . The sons Karl Philipp Christian Schönemann , later head of the Wolfenbüttel library , and Karl Adolf Theodor Schönemann, later higher regional court procurator in Wolfenbüttel, were born in 1801 and 1802. Carl Traugott Gottlob Schönemann died in the year the second son was born. His widow returned with the sons to their parents' house in Wolfenbüttel.

Individual evidence

  1. ^ Name spelling Carl in all book titles and in Schulte, otherwise often Karl ; Gottlieb as the third first name is erroneous (ADB).
  2. Schulte; ADB chronologically deviating
  3. a b Statistics (from the Latin status - “status, state”) still has the older meaning “inventory recording” without focus on numbers: floor plan
