Christian Leistes father was a pastor in Loitsche. Leiste attended the grammar school Our Dear Women in Magdeburg and then studied mathematics in Halle , next to theology (with Siegmund Jakob Baumgarten ), philosophy and philology . During this time he was already teaching at the Latin School of the Francke Foundations , where he received a full teaching position in 1761. Here Gottfried August Bürger and Leopold Friedrich Günther von Goeckingk were among his students.

In the spring of 1766, at the age of 27, he became a teacher and deputy principal at the Great School in Wolfenbüttel. Upon request, the management of the Francke Foundations recommended him for this post "because of the honesty of his heart, because of his orderly change and diligence in his work, no less because of his humility in dealings".

In Wolfenbüttel he gained great recognition as a teacher of natural sciences and mathematics. But theology, history and geography were also among his teaching duties.

Jakob Friedrich Heusinger died in 1778 , and Leiste became the rector of the Great School as his successor. In 1786 Duke Karl Wilhelm Ferdinand awarded him the title of professor .

In Wolfenbüttel, Leiste belonged to Lessing's circle of friends and employees. He valued him as a "worthy schoolboy". Leiste, on the other hand, is said to have warned his students about Lessing's mentality , according to Wilhelm Raabe's testimony , who married a granddaughter of Leiste in 1862.

Since 1767 Leiste was married to Elisabeth Magdalene Sophia Cuno, a daughter of the Wolfenbüttel sub-contractor Johann Friedrich Cuno (1711–1747) and granddaughter Sigismund Andreas Cunos . Of their 13 children, 6 died of childhood. The daughter Elisabeth Henriette married the Göttingen professor Carl Traugott Gottlob Schönemann in 1800 ; after his early death in 1802, she returned to her parents' house with her two young sons Karl Philipp and Karl Adolf Theodor. After Leiste's death in 1815, his son Anton Friedrich became his successor. The son Christoph Ludwig became Wilhelm Raabe's father-in-law in 1862.
