The Stöhna flood retention basin is located south of Leipzig in Saxony and is part of the Untere Pleiße storage system . It was built from 1972 to 1977 from a remaining open pit and is normally only filled to a small extent. In the event of flooding , the water from the Pleiße is transferred into the basin and thus retained. The dam is an earth dam with a clay seal on the basin side.
The name of the retention basin came from the village of Stöhna , which was once located here not far from the Pleiße. It had to be demolished in 1956 as the Espenhain opencast mine was advancing .
The pool is a nature reserve , which is why it cannot be entered.
