The ponds were artificially created in the 18th century for the purpose of fish farming by the nearby manor in Frohburg. The largest pond is the large pond near Eschefeld. At its edge there is a small settlement, called the pond house , which arose from the four-sided courtyard that was built in 1780 for commercial use. The ponds are mainly fed by rainwater and via a pipeline that can be used to pump water from the Wyhra von Frohburg. The pipeline is in a desolate condition, so that the water level in the large pond is well below the normal level due to the lack of water, which in turn has had a negative impact on the breeding success in the pond area.

The Eschefeld ponds are important feeding, breeding and resting areas for numerous water bird species . The area is mainly used for agriculture. In the pond house Eschefeld there is a nature conservation station of the NABU as well as a restaurant. For visitors and bird lovers, a shelter has been built on the artificial dam on the bank of the large pond, from which the water birds can be observed.
