The spiral staircase (cabaret)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The spiral staircase in Hamburg is Germany's oldest literary cabaret .

history

The cabaret was founded on June 2, 1946, a year after the end of World War II , by Dirks Paulun , Hans Harbeck and Carl Bay . A short time later, Heinz Erhardt joined them. They found their artistic home in the Vogt Conservatory in Othmarschen , where a spiral staircase led to the lecture room, which gave the cabaret its name. In the beginning, artists , writers and journalists gathered there to present their works.

The first function room became too small. The cultural workers found their new home in 1949 in the “tavern” in the basement of Otto Friedrich Behnke's Winterhuder ferry house . After Behnke's death, the Remter am Dammtor became the new domicile of the spiral staircase in 1966 . There the composer and pianist Hanns Kunz directed the events, who also performed texts with the chanson singer Inge Rohwer. After intermediate stops in Buhbe's wine taverns on Großneumarkt (from 1974), in Berett at the Colonnaden (from 1975) and in the Hamburg Aalstuben on Kanalstrasse (from 1976), after a one-and-a-half year break, it went back to Remter in 1979 under the new management of Walter Odrowski .

At the beginning of the 1980s the “Club der Wendeltreppe” was founded to support the cabaret and to track down the next generation. There were differences of opinion and the "Club" held its own events under the name "Hamburger Brettl". So there were temporarily two cabaret stages related to the spiral staircase: "The spiral staircase" under Walter Odrowski and the "Club der Wendeltreppe" with Vera Hempelmann as chairman. The “Club” remained and was renamed “Die Wendeltreppe eV” at the end of 1982.

The cabaret found space for the events in 1985, after the Remter was demolished in 1984, in the house of the Patriotic Society and later in the Fleetenkieker on the Börsenbrücke. In 1989 Marion Muschter took over the chairmanship of the association and thus the management of the literary cabaret. After further stations, such as the Friesenhof at the Mundsburg (from 1994), the parliament (formerly Ratsweinkeller ) in the Hamburg town hall became the place where the spiral staircase worked.

On the occasion of the 44th anniversary, Hamburg's Second Mayor Ingo von Münch described the spiral staircase in a greeting as an "institution [...] that has become an integral part of Hamburg's cultural life". In 1996 the spiral staircase celebrated its 50th anniversary and entered the Guinness Book of Records as the “oldest literary cabaret in Germany” .

Support association

“The spiral staircase” is supported by a support association . Marion Muschter, who has been the artistic and commercial director since 1989 and is responsible for the program, is the chairman of the voluntary board. Deputy chairwoman is the Low German author Christa Heise-Batt . For their work on the spiral staircase, Christa Heise-Batt and Marion Muschter were honored in 2015 by the Hamburg Senate with the bronze medal for faithful work in the service of the people .
