Invasion of Privacy is the debut album by American rapper Cardi B . It was released on April 6, 2018.

backgrounds

Cardi B originally received her first attention through her online presence on Instagram and her appearances on the reality show Love & Hip Hop: New York , which she attended in 2015. After the two commercially unsuccessful mixtapes Gangsta Bitch Music, Vol. 1 and Gangsta Bitch Music, Vol. 2 , which she released in 2016 and 2017, she succeeded in the last year through the solo single Bodak Yellow and some collaborations with well-known artists in the To establish the American musical landscape. Her debut album Invasion of Privacy soon became one of the most anticipated releases of 2018 after announcement.

With Math Allen , DJ SwanQo , Cassius Jay , Nonstop Da Hitman , Nes , Ayo the Producer , Keyzbaby , J. White Did It , Laquan Green , Boi-1da , Vinylz , Frank Dukes , Allen Ritter , Craig Kallman , Tainy , Needlz , Scribz Riley , 30 Roc , Cheeze Beatz , Mustard , DJ Official , Benny Blanco , Watt , CuBeatz and Murda Beatz , a large number of producers were involved in the creation of the work. Most of them were involved in the writing process alongside Cardi B herself, who co-wrote every song, and a plethora of other songwriters . The guest musicians on the album include Migos , Chance the Rapper , Bad Bunny , J Balvin , Kehlani , 21 Savage , YG and SZA , all of whom also wrote their respective songs.

Four commercial singles were released from the album: Bodak Yellow , Bartier Cardi , Be Careful and I Like It . The first and fourth releases were great commercial successes in some countries, both of which reached number 1 in the charts in the United States, making Cardi B the first female rapper to record two number one songs in this country. I Like It was also the seventh most successful song of 2018 there. The other two singles achieved moderate positions in the music market with positions 14 and 11 in the hit parade.

Music and lyrics

Invasion of Privacy is a hip hop album with strong elements from the trap subgenre. In particular, its use of deep 808 - bass drums and rapid hi-hats can be assigned to that style. On most of the songs, Cardi B's lecture resembles less the melodic and mostly autotune technique of traps than the direct, classic battlerap and old school hip-hop . Also aesthetics of Contemporary R & B and Latin can be found on individual songs.

In terms of content, a large part of the album revolves around the musician's social advancement, from her beginnings as a stripper to her later status as a rich superstar . The approach is different from song to song, and there are both aggressive and humorous self-presentations, as well as introspective descriptions of the hardship that this difficult path required. Another recurring theme on the album are breaches of trust within a relationship and their consequences.

Cover design

The album cover for Invasion of Privacy shows Cardi B from the waist up in front of a petrol-colored background on a chair in yellow colors with a brown cover and licking her teeth . She wears a suit with a striking, asymmetrical checkerboard pattern and large shoulder pads , as well as sunglasses with a white frame, the lenses of which reflect the lighting . She has applied purple lipstick and an unnaturally yellow wig on her head . To her left is the artist's name in thin yellow letters; on the right the word “Privacy” in much larger and thicker letters. On this are in pink , one in their style handwriting resembling letters to see the words "Invasion of." In the upper left corner, reminiscent of a film camera , next to a red circle is the word “REC” in white.

Criticism and reception

Invasion of Privacy received almost unanimously very positive reviews. It was particularly highlighted that Cardi B showed not only self-confidence but also approachable vulnerability, and that it was an excellent combination of these two components. Her sense of quotable punchlines , her vocal presentation including her accent , her charm and her personality were also very well received.

The album achieved some high positions in several best lists of 2018. Rolling Stone magazine , which named the album the best of the year, was particularly enthusiastic . Also Billboard , The Guardian , Complex and Pitchfork included, among other things in their rankings.

At the Grammy Awards in 2019 was Invasion of Privacy in the category Best Rap Album award.

Invasion of Privacy was a huge commercial success in several countries, including reaching the top of the charts in the United States and Canada . In their home country, the work was the sixth most commercially successful album of 2018. It was also able to position itself in the top ten in Australia , Belgium , Denmark , Finland , New Zealand , the Netherlands , Norway , Sweden and the United Kingdom . In the German-speaking area it sold comparatively moderately. In Germany it climbed to number 39, in Austria to number 21 and in Switzerland to number 20.
