When shoulder pads made of textiles are called manufactured fittings used in garments above the shoulders are sewn. Shoulder pads can either protect the upper body or they are used to shape the shoulder area according to the respective fashion .

history

As early as the 17th century , the shoulders of the upper class were emphasized by padding.

In 1932 the costume designer Gilbert Adrian first used the shoulder pads for the film Letty Lynton in women's fashion. The fashion designer created an almost rectangular costume for actress Joan Crawford , who had shoulders far too broad for her role, and started a fashion trend with it.

In the 1930s, the fashion of the broad shoulder sections reached a peak. As a hallmark of a “strong woman”, padded shoulders became particularly popular with women in business and politics. In the literature, too, women were encouraged to assert themselves in the working world by wearing masculine-looking clothing.

In the 1940s, when women's clothing was militarized from the US during World War II , broad, high shoulders became popular again. For example, they made a producer of shoulder pads, Maurice Uchitel , for a short time the “King of Shoulder Pads” ( English Shoulder Pad King ) and thus a wealthy man.

Crawford was still the model. After the war, shoulder pads began to decline in importance, and by the early 1950s their size and distribution shrank. They were more common in coats and jackets than in blouses.

In the 1980s, shoulder pad fashion experienced a renaissance . Well-known representatives of the fashion labels that shaped the culture of shoulder pads at the time include Thierry Mugler and Claude Montana . Whole generations of women politicians like Margaret Thatcher were known almost exclusively with broad shoulders. In 2009 shoulder pads were expected to return to the fashion world. In fashion metropolises like Paris and New York , models like Katy Perry have already presented retro clothing inserts on the catwalk .

materials

Shoulder pads have different designs and can be made from different materials. In addition to the normal, sew-in items, there are self-adhesive pads wrapped in light fabrics that can be worn under any tops. Shoulder pads with fleece cover are suitable for tops without an inner lining (such as jackets , jackets and coats ), while for items of clothing with an inner lining, inserts with a Perlon cover are usually used. Variations with Velcro fasteners can be stacked on top of each other to enhance the effect.
