SZA (2017)

SZA (born November 8, 1990 in St. Louis , Missouri ; real name Solána Imani Rowe ) is an American R&B singer and songwriter .

Life

Rowe was born in 1990 in St. Louis, Missouri, the daughter of a production manager at CNN and a manager at AT&T . She grew up in Maplewood , New Jersey and was brought up in an Orthodox Muslim . She maintains the Islamic faith to this day. After graduating from school, she began studying humanities , but dropped out after a while. Her stage name is based on the rapper RZA and the Supreme Alphabet .

Career

Rowe first became known in October 2012 when she released the EP See.SZA.Run without the involvement of a music label . The EPs S (2013) and Z (2014) followed. Her debut album Ctrl was released on June 9, 2017 and received consistently positive reviews. It immediately reached number three on the Billboard 200 . The single releases The Weekend and Love Galore went platinum in the USA in 2017 . In August 2017 she started the Ctrl the Tour . The singer has been nominated several times for the Grammy Awards 2018 , including for the best urban contemporary album.
