Lorde (2017)

Lorde [ lɔːrd ] (* 7. November 1996 in Devonport , Auckland ), real name Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O'Connor , is a New Zealand - Croatian electro - musician .

The stage name Lorde (with a silent "e") is due to her interest in aristocracy and royalty .

Life

origin

Lorde is one of four children (one son and three daughters) of the poet Sonja Yelich ( Croatian : Sonja Jelić) and the civil engineer Vic O'Connor. The family is of Croatian and Irish descent.

Start of her career (2009-2011)

Participating in a talent competition at her school in Belmont was the start of her career. A video excerpt came to Universal Music , which they signed at the age of twelve and henceforth support their development. In 2011 Lorde finished the first songs. Together with Joel Little as producer , Lorde implemented the songs musically. Little wrote and produced songs for the electro pop band Kids of 88 and became famous in 2010 as the singer for the pop punk band Goodnight Nurse .

International breakthrough (since 2012)

At the end of 2012 she released her first EP entitled The Love Club freely on the internet. Within a short time, the five titles were accessed 20,000 times and Lorde became known far beyond New Zealand. In spring 2013 the EP was officially offered on iTunes . It reached number two on the New Zealand album charts. The EP's song Royals became a number one hit on the singles chart, stayed at the top for three weeks and went triple platinum . Up to this point in time, the associated video had been viewed over fifty million times on YouTube and another three-quarters of a million times on the Soundcloud music platform .

In May 2013 her first gigs followed in New Zealand and Australia, which were all sold out. Shortly afterwards two new songs appeared in New Zealand. Tennis Court reached number one again. At the beginning of July her first song Royals was released in the USA and celebrated an enormous success. The song rose continuously in the charts and reached number one in the US singles charts at the end of September 2013 - no other New Zealand artist had achieved this before Lorde. Royals became the second best-selling song of 2013 in the US for nine weeks at the top of the charts. Worldwide, the number of hits on YouTube rose to over 15 million.

At the same time, the debut album Pure Heroine was released, which contained only new songs except for the two number one hits. The song team was able to place itself in the charts beforehand. The album debuted at number one in New Zealand and Australia in early October and number three in the US. Team became a top ten hit in New Zealand and the USA.

In late 2013, Lorde was nominated for four Grammy Awards , three times for Royals and once for the album Pure Heroine . At the Grammy Awards 2014 , at which she also performed the Song Royals herself , she received two awards: in the main category Song of the Year and for the best pop performance .

In 2014 she curated the soundtrack The Hunger Games - Mockingjay Part 1 , on which her song Yellow Flicker Beat can be heard.
