Kendrick Lamar (2018)

Kendrick Lamar (born June 17, 1987 in Compton , California ; real name Kendrick Lamar Duckworth ), also known by his pseudonyms "K.Dot", "Cornrow Kenny" and "Kung Fu Kenny", is an American rapper and songwriter .

Career

Kendrick Lamar's parents moved to Compton before he was born because his father, Kenny Duckworth , wanted to escape his Chicago past with the notorious street gang gangster Disciples . His mother found a job at McDonald's and his father worked at KFC , but the couple found it difficult to gain a foothold in the new area. Lamar spent his childhood in precarious circumstances; as a young boy he learned that his father continued to work “on the street” to take care of the small family, and some of his maternal uncles were Compton Crips . The neighborhood he grew up in, like all of Compton, was characterized by gang violence. Some of his friends belonged to both the Bloods and the competing Crips. He himself never became a member of any gang.

At the age of nine, Lamar was watching the video footage for California Love , a Dr. Dre and Tupac Shakur , which made him dig deeper into rap. At the Centennial High School, which Lamar attended, André Romell Young - alias Dr. Dre, with whom he would later work several times.

In 2009 he joined forces with his rap colleagues and friends Schoolboy Q , Jay Rock and Ab-Soul to form the hip-hop group Black Hippy , all of whom were signed to the Top Dawg Entertainment label , but did not record an album for the time being.

For the first time, after the release of the mixtape Overly Dedicated in 2010, the scene moved into focus. In 2011, his album Section.80 , which was released exclusively on iTunes, became one of the most successful hip-hop albums of the year. He worked with Snoop Dogg , Dr. Dre, Emeli Sandé , Wiz Khalifa , Eminem , The Game , Drake , Busta Rhymes , Lady Gaga , SZA and Tech N9ne together.

On October 22, 2012, his second studio album, Good Kid, Maad City was released . It contains, among other things, productions by Dr. Dre, Just Blaze, Pharrell Williams , Hit-Boy , Scoop DeVille and T-Minus . The album reached number 2 in the USA and was also able to place itself in the charts internationally. It received many positive reviews and has been widely referred to as a masterpiece. At the 2014 Grammy Awards, Lamar received a total of 7 nominations.

It received overwhelming acclaim, especially for its socially critical texts on topics such as racism , police violence , depression and self-love . Lamar himself was celebrated as a poet. At the Grammy Awards 2016 he received a total of four awards: for the best collaboration - rap / singing of the year, for the best rap performance of the year, the best rap album and for the best rap song of the year. He was nominated in a total of eleven different categories.

On July 13, it was announced that Damn. Has achieved double platinum in the US, which is Kendrick Lamar's greatest commercial success to date. At the Grammy Awards 2018 he won all four awards in the rap category with the album and the songs Humble and Loyalty contained on it, as well as a fifth Grammy for the video for Humble .
