biography

Life

Emeli Sandé (2013)

Emeli Sandé was born on March 10, 1987 in Sunderland . Her father Joel is from Zambia , her mother Diane from England . Sandé's talent was already evident in childhood: at the age of 11 she wrote her first song, at 15 she was invited to London by the radio station ChoiceFM to take part in their “Rapology” competition. Although she was offered a recording contract for the first time while she was still at school, she initially decided to study medicine at the University of Glasgow , as a career as a full-time singer and the associated move to London still seemed too risky for her at that time. By appearing in various Glasgow hotels, she earned extra income while studying; At the same time, she also tried her hand at songwriting, but, according to her own account, hardly found the leisure for non-study texts. After several trips to London had led to fruitful contacts with the music industry, Sandé devoted himself increasingly to songwriting. When she was finally signed to Virgin Records because of her creative and vocal talents , she dropped out of medical school in early 2010 and has since focused entirely on her music career.

After the English pop, soul, jazz, R&B and rock singer Adele had successfully established herself in the international music business, the Scottish woman decided to only appear under her second name Emeli in future in order to avoid any risk of confusion with Adele.

In June 2012, Emeli Sandé spoke in an interview about her engagement to her long-term boyfriend, initially not named, whom she referred to as a “scientist” at the time. On the occasion of the wedding in his home country Montenegro on September 15, 2012 it was finally announced that it was the marine biologist Adam Gouraguine, with whom Sandé had been in a relationship for seven years.

Career

2003-2010: beginnings

At the age of 16, Emeli Sandé was first noticed nationwide in Great Britain. At the time, she was still studying at high school in rural Alford and was working in her spare time in the supermarket when she reached the final of Trevor Nelson's BBC Urban Music competition. Her sister had filmed them while Sandé was playing the song “Nasty Little Lady”, which she had written a few months earlier, on the piano, and the siblings had sent this video to the BBC.

As one of the winners of the radio competition, she was then offered a record deal, but Sandé turned it down at this point; instead, she first finished school and began studying medicine. In the following years, her mother sent several CDs with recordings of the singer to the radio station BBC Radio 1Xtra, which specializes in urban music, whose DJ Ras Kwame took the young talent seriously and presented it to the listeners as part of his "homegrown sessions". During an appearance in Soho initiated by the radio station, Sandé, who had traveled from Madrid especially for a medical internship , met the producer and songwriter Shahid Khan alias Naughty Boy ; this was previously already for artists such. B. Ms. Dynamite and Bashy. Together with him, Sandé began to write for other artists on the music scene; one of her first compositions was "Diamond Rings" for the British rapper Chipmunk. Sandé took part in the recording herself as a singer, and in the summer of 2009 the title Chipmunks and - as part of her singing career - simultaneously reached Sandé's first top ten in the British singles charts.

The successful work of the Scottish singer was not hidden from the record industry; In August 2009, Sandé, who could now imagine a career in the music business, was finally signed by the record label EMI / Virgin Records .

In March 2010, the Scottish woman was again represented in the British Top10 together with the British rapper Wiley; Shahid Khan was again instrumental in the success of the title "Never Be Your Woman".

Songwriting

Emeli Sandé at the 2013 NRJ Music Awards

Emeli Sandé kept working as a songwriter and said: “I have just finished the song Lifetime for Cher Lloyd's new album . Another one will be on the next Leona Lewis album . I also wrote one for Susan Boyle . That's probably what I'm most proud of right now. Another work is called River, which I hope she will record for her new album as well. "

While working on her debut album, Sandé began working with Tinie Tempah . She was engaged as a co-writer for the song Let Go, on which she also participated as a guest singer. She also began recording the track Dreamer with Devlin . Sandé also later recorded an album track called The Entertainer with Alesha Dixon . She also co-wrote Shahid Khan's hit single Radio and wrote several pieces on Cheryl Cole's albums as well as Professor Green's album, on which Sandé also appeared as a guest singer. She said she is Simon Cowell's favorite songwriter right now because of her songs for Leona Lewis and Susan Boyle. Sandé said in an interview that she would like to meet Susan Boyle to introduce her to a few songs: “I haven't met her yet. I sent her the song. I'd really like to meet her because I think she's got rock star talent. ” Sandé co-wrote a song on her new album, This Will Be the Year . Leona Lewis heard a few of her songs and worked with her for a week in her studio. “Leona and I worked really well together. We spent a second week in the studio together. It was very natural and she recorded two of my songs. They are called Trouble and Mountains . I look forward to hearing her on her album. ”It emerged after Professor Green announced his album's tracklist that her songs At Your Inconvenience and Read All About It were on the album. The single Read All About It was released in October 2011 as an announcement for the album. The song was featured on The X Factor .

Sandé's music is inspired by artists such as Nina Simone , Joni Mitchell and Lauryn Hill . She said all of her songs are about world peace and political issues. She also notes that the key to a good song is songwriting. Honesty and sheer emotion, they are the best way to write. She said if she tried to write something “too smart” the creative process wouldn't work for her. Kill the Boy was one of the first ideas that came to Sandé's head. If she had to work on a song for more than a day, stop writing because getting back into it wouldn't work. If she wants to start, an idea for a song comes up immediately.
