Selection of winners
The artists or music groups nominated for the European Border Breakers Awards are selected based on the following criteria:
Success of the debut album from the previous year in other European countries outside the artist's home country.
Airtime statistics of the broadcasting stations belonging to the European broadcasting organization (EBU).
Success of the artists at European festivals belonging to the ETEP network (ETEP) outside the home country of the artists.
Audience award
Since 2010, the public has been able to vote online about which of the EBBA winners should receive the audience award in addition to the “normal” price. The first winner of this award was the Belgian singer and songwriter Milow . In 2011, the German rock and roll band The Baseballs won this award.

Award ceremony
Since 2009, the award ceremony has taken place in January as part of the Eurosonic Noorderslag festival in Groningen , the Netherlands , and is moderated by the BBC star and musician Jools Holland. EBBA winners will perform live at this show and during the festival . Prize winners from previous years are invited as star guests. The award ceremony will be recorded by the Dutch broadcaster NOS / NTR and broadcast on Ned 3. The show is broadcast on several television networks each year.

The EBBA Music Prize was launched by the European Commission in 2004 with the aim of promoting the cross-border distribution of pop music and highlighting the great musical diversity of Europe. The European Border Breakers Awards are financially supported by the “Culture” program of the European Union to promote the cross-border mobility of artists and cultural workers.
