Charlie Winston (born September 14, 1978 in Cornwall , England ; actually Charlie Winston Gleave ) is a British singer-songwriter .
Live and act
Charlie Winston comes from a musical family. The parents were musicians in the 1960s and 1970s before they settled in Suffolk , eastern England , and opened the King's Head Hotel in Bungay . Winston's older brother Tom Baxter has been a successful singer since 2004 and together with her sister Vashti Anna they have already been on stage together.
At the age of eight, Charlie Winston learned to play the drums and then the piano. During this time he was also active in a teen band called Body Clock . At 17 he went to a music college in London, where he studied jazz piano, among other things. He wrote music for two dance ensembles and performed as a bass guitarist with his brother and with the National Youth Reggae Ensemble . A period in India followed, studying Indian music before returning to work as a musician and composer for film and theater.
For the first time he received more attention when he recorded a cover version of the song I'm a Man by the Spencer Davis Group for a car commercial . In the video, the song was put in a dog's mouth, whereupon animal lovers complained and the spot was withdrawn.
In 2006 he met Peter Gabriel , signed with his label and appeared in the opening act on Gabriel's European tour the following year. In the same year he also recorded his debut album Make Way . Further appearances followed, many of them in Germany and France. It was there that the collaboration with the Atmosphériques label came about, especially with Mark Plati, who had already produced for many well-known artists. The album Hobo was created in Paris and London in 2008 .
With his song Like a Hobo , Winston appeared in France on the music show Taratata , and the song appeared in the opening credits of the talk show Le Grand Journal . As a result, there was so much demand for the song that both the single and album appeared in the charts in France, Belgium and Switzerland. After the single and album had conquered number 1 in the charts in France , the song was also successfully released in Germany and Austria.
In 2010 he was awarded the European Border Breakers Award (EBBA).
The album Running still , which was released in France in 2011 , went up to number 5 in the album charts. In Germany it was only released in February 2012. Several radio stations, including HR3 and Deutschlandradio Kultur, made it the “album of the week”. The styles assigned to the songs - from old-school hip-hop to danceable sixties soul - change from one piece to the next, so that reviewers say that it can hardly be classified into a single style.
Winston said he was inspired by Jacques Brel in an interview with the French telecom company SFR . He lived in Paris for years before returning to the UK capital in 2014.
