chronology
- It's july A New Day
(2006)

The debut album Es ist Juli by the pop group Juli was released in September 2004 and is the band's most successful release so far.

Emergence

In August 2003 the band signed their record deal, after which the debut album was recorded from November 2003 to January 2004. Most of the tracks were recorded in the Mohrmann Studio in Bochum , two tracks ( Why and Geile Zeit ) in the Homestudio Hamburg.

Some of the songs on the album had already been written by the band in 2001/02, immediately after their renaming in July and the associated turn to German-language texts.

Title, cover and booklet

The name of the album is taken from a line from the song November ("Because it's July") and at the same time is an allusion to the band name.

The cover is in a collage style and illustrates the album title. There are different shades of green paired with red blobs, which in turn represent flowers. On a larger blob in the left half is the band name in yellow script, immediately below the album title in smaller, white script. In the right half you can see the heads of the band members in black and white photography, with that of the singer Eva Briegel being more in the foreground and larger than those of her bandmates.

The collage style of the cover continues throughout the booklet. Light background shades of blue, green, yellow, red, brown etc. are used, paired with a colorful mixture of different photos of the band members as well as graphics that are supposed to represent plants. In addition, capital letters are not used in the entire booklet.

Sales and chart placements

It's July is the band's most successful album to date. In Germany, the album reached second place as the best placement in the album charts, was in the charts for 74 weeks and sold around 700,000 times. For this, July received three platinum records . It is July was also awarded platinum in Austria . There the album stayed in the charts for 50 weeks and took fourth place as the best chart placement. In Switzerland, it reached seventh place and was able to stay in the charts for exactly one year.

tour

The first tour of their own was a club tour that took them across Germany in July, October and November 2004. After a few concerts as the opening act for Rosenstolz , the actual Es ist Juli tour began in February 2005, which took the band to more than 60 concert and festival stages in Germany and the neighboring countries in various stages and finally ended in Düsseldorf at the end of September 2005 .

The last time the band performed was in the summer of 2006, while working on their second album, at some festivals with mostly old and some new songs.

On February 21, 2005 a special edition of the album was released in Germany. In addition to the normal CD, this also contained a bonus DVD with live versions of three songs recorded in Vienna ( November , Perfekte Welle and Ich verschwinde ), a documentary about the club tour from autumn 2004 and a slide show with previously unpublished photos.

music

In addition to the classic rock instrumentation guitar-bass-drums, keyboards, strings and trombones can also be heard, each of which was played by guest musicians. In terms of genre, the album can be assigned to pop-rock, although the pop component does not necessarily predominate. The influences of contemporary rock music cannot be ignored.

In Perfekte Welle , the attempt is made to musically implement the noise of waves, especially in the intro and in the middle section, where Eva Briegel's soft singing can be heard in the background and she repeats the word "wave" several times before the chorus. In addition, the wave motif is underlined by the fact that the verses sound rather calm, while the refrain is implemented much more energetically. Shortly before the sun is the only piece on the album that contains a style break, in that the music style changes to reggae in places and is supplemented by rap interludes by reggae artist Ben Robby . If you laugh is a very ballad-like piece, the instrumentalization of which is reduced to piano and drums, the drums not kicking in until the second verse. The very sad, gloomy and melancholy melody conveys a kind of “doomsday mood”.

Most of the songs are structured as follows: 1st verse - transition - chorus - 2nd verse - transition - chorus - 3rd (short verse with changed melody) - chorus. Sometimes, however, the first stanza is significantly longer than the second (e.g. Why ) or two stanzas are sung in a row ( Geile Zeit ).

Texts

General

The lyrics are mostly about love.

Why does a wild night of love, Sterne describes a lyrical self in a drunk state (“I've drank so much”), who has hallucinations (“Why are you blurring in the sea of stars”). In Geile Zeit , Tänenschwerwer and November it's about love that no longer works, in days like this one , Anders and When you laugh , lovesickness is the theme. Rain and sea deal with immortal love, I disappear a so-called Romeo and Juliet scenario ("They tell you, I'm not worth it [...] if I could do anything else I would love you")

Only Perfect Wave and Shortly Before the Sun do not deal with the topic of love. Perfect wave is about an opportunity in life that should be seized after many setbacks. Shortly before the sun deals with a rather opposite scenario, in which an alleged opportunity backfires.

Occasionally youthful slang is also used in the texts (“And I hope you check that it is not important” in Why , “And I think it's cool to see you like that” in Sterne , “I could throw up because I know everyone Time in the world is not enough "in I disappear ," Yes, I know it was a great time "in Geile Zeit ).

Perfect wave and tsunami disaster

After the tsunami disaster in Southeast Asia in December 2004, in which tidal waves claimed more than 280,000 lives, most radio stations immediately removed the song from their programs because, in their opinion, its text had acquired an unwanted ambiguity, as lines like That is the perfect wave / this is the perfect day / just let it carry you / it is best not to think about it , or now it is slowly coming towards you / the water hits you in the face / you see your life like a film of waves is. In the first few days after the catastrophe, it sometimes happened that the song was broadcast on the station immediately after reports or calls for donations. This could be understood as deliberate sarcasm by the audience , but it is mostly likely caused by autorotation . However, the text is about a surfer who in a particularly well-suited for surfing after a long wait wave hits - a metaphor for the benefit of an opportunity that arises after a long and futile hope. The band and their record company Universal Music expressed understanding for the discontinuation of the single.
