List of locomotives and railcars in the Palatinate

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This list contains the locomotives and railcars of the Palatinate Railways and the Palatinate network of the Royal Bavarian State Railways .

Designation of the locomotives

The locomotives from the Palatinate were numbered consecutively and given a name. Numbers that became available through retirement were given back to newly delivered locomotives. A separate number range with Roman numerals was used for ship bridge, secondary railway and narrow-gauge locomotives .

The assignment of names was stopped in 1904, because the sale to the Bavarian state was imminent. Only four locomotives delivered afterwards - three P 4 and one L 1 - were given names. Cities, castles, rivers and mountains from the Palatinate were mostly chosen as namesake. The episode remained the use of names from the saga of classical antiquity. The special importance of the express train locomotives was emphasized by the fact that they bore the names of Bavarian regents as well as important personalities of the Bavarian government and the management of the Pfalzbahn.

The introduction of generic names on the Pfalzbahn did not take place until 1898. Four main groups were formed:

  • P - passenger and express train locomotives (also tank locomotives for these services)
  • G - freight locomotives
  • T - tank locomotives (for mixed service)
  • L - narrow gauge locomotives (for local railways)

The generic letter was followed by an Arabic number to differentiate between the individual types. A superscript Roman numeral was used to designate substructures. The Palatinate generic names were only used on paper and not written on the locomotives themselves.

With the takeover of the Palatinate network by the Bavarian State Railways on January 1, 1909, their designation system for new locomotives was adopted. Older locomotives, however, retained their generic name. The locomotives newly built for the Palatinate network continued to receive numbers following the number series of the Pfalzbahn.

Railcar

The Palatinate railcars were listed in the rolling stock directory and given wagon numbers. In addition to the new construction vehicles listed in the table below, two narrow-gauge battery-powered multiple units provided by an electrical company were tested in 1896/97. In addition, between 1897 and 1900, four two-axle passenger cars - one of which had an additional central axle - were provisionally converted into battery-powered railcars and used. After delivery of the new wagons, they were dismantled into passenger cars.
