Former Bavarian D XII as BR 73 on the Deutsche Reichsbahn, 1931

The steam locomotive D XII was manufactured by the Krauss company from 1897 for the Royal Bavarian State Railways . They were procured for service on the branch lines leading from Munich into the mountains in several series with slightly different dimensions in a total of 96 copies, but were freely stationed in many large Bavarian railway depots. Two machines with the road numbers 2240 and 2252 were handed over to the Pfalzbahn in 1916, the other 94 later came to the Deutsche Reichsbahn and were classified as class 73 0–1 with road numbers 73 031–124.

The Pfalzbahn procured 31 copies of the P 2 II , which was almost identical in construction with the third series of the D XII, in the years 1900 to 1903, which were stationed in Neustadt , among other places . Three of these locomotives were handed over to the Saarland Railways (SAAR) in 1920 , the remaining 28 machines were taken over by the Deutsche Reichsbahn as 73 001-028. The two machines acquired by the Bavarian State Railroad also came to the SAAR, where they were given the numbers 6604 and 6605 following the Pfalzbahn machines numbered 6601–6603.

The Reichseisenbahnen in Alsace-Lorraine purchased another 37 machines, again with slightly different dimensions, between 1903 and 1912. Here they were given the series designation D 32, from 1906 T 5 and from 1912 T 7 and the company numbers 2201–2237 (from 1912 6601–6637) . One of these vehicles was taken over by the Deutsche Reichsbahn under road number 73 125, the others were already taken out of service before the takeover.

The Bavarian Pt 2/5 H , built as a single piece in 1906 , had shown that the use of superheated steam with the low coupling axle load did not bring any clear advantages. As a result, another nine machines with wet steam engines were built as Pt 2/5 N in 1907 . These machines were classified as 73 131 to 73 139 on the Deutsche Reichsbahn.

The Palatinate locomotives that remained with the Saar Railways and the Pt 2/5 N, T 7 and P2 II taken over by the DR were retired between 1925 and 1935. The D XII were also retired by 1941.

73 076 and 73 111 have been used as a heating locomotive . 73 076 was used as Nuremberg heating locomotive No. 701.002 (according to other sources as a washing locomotive in the Ansbach depot, storage in 1948), 73 111 for track construction trains as Nuremberg heating locomotive No. 701.003.
