List of Württemberg locomotives and railcars

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This list includes the locomotives and railcars of the Royal Württemberg State Railways .

Designation of the locomotives

Starting in 1845, the Württemberg State Railroad divided its locomotives into classes. The first classification took place continuously with the procurement of the individual vehicles in classes I to VII.

This scheme proved impractical in use, so a new system was introduced in 1858.

  • A - Light express and express train locomotives
  • B - Heavy express and express train locomotives
  • C - Light passenger locomotives
  • D - Heavy passenger locomotives
  • E - Light freight locomotives
  • F - Heavy freight locomotives
  • T - tank locomotives

In some cases the previous classes were simply redrawn. In other cases, new buildings and conversions were grouped together in one class despite the different design. Over time, the system's shortcomings became apparent. The division into “light” and “heavy” locomotives was particularly unfortunate. In addition, the classes were no longer sufficient for new locomotives. Therefore the scheme was changed slightly from 1892 onwards. Classes that had become vacant due to retirement were filled again.

  • A to E - passenger locomotives
  • F to K - freight locomotives
  • T - tank locomotives

The individual classes were subdivided again using lowercase letters in order to be able to represent certain properties as well as Arabic numerals to represent individual designs.

  • a - older locomotives
  • aa - very old, ready for withdrawal
  • c - compound (compound engine)
  • d - duplex (double engine = mallet)
  • h - superheated steam locomotive
  • n - branch line locomotive
  • z - cogwheel locomotive
  • s - Narrow gauge locomotive, 1000 mm gauge
  • ss - narrow-gauge locomotive 750 mm gauge

Furthermore, some special designations were introduced such as KL for small locomotives, DW for steam railcars, BW for gasoline railcars and AW for accumulator railcars.

The Württemberg locomotives were given names until 1896. As a rule, geographical names (cities, rivers) served as namesake. In many cases, the locomotives were given names from the vicinity of the area of operation. When the home was changed, the name was changed many times.

In addition to their names, the locomotives were also given numbers. Up to 1890, the number was consecutively up to 377. From this point on, the newly acquired locomotives were assigned a special group of numbers for each class, usually a hundred numbers, starting with 401.

When the locomotives were rebuilt, they were assigned to a new class, but kept their company number.

Steam locomotives

Early locomotives for all types of trains

Most of these locomotives were rebuilt between 1867 and 1893. None of the locomotives was redrawn to an operating number of the Deutsche Reichsbahn .

Rebuild locomotives

The Royal Württemberg State Railways converted older locomotives to a far greater extent than other German state railways in order to be able to continue using them. This conversion activity can be divided into two periods of time: In the first conversion period, which lasted from 1867 to 1887, under the chief engineers Heinrich von Brockmann and Adolf Groß , older 2'B locomotives were converted into single-axle 1B machines and tank locomotives with different axles. During the second conversion period between 1887 and 1910, the last existing 2'B locomotives were converted into tank locomotives under the chief machinists Adolf Klose and Eugen Kittel Locomotive types adjusted in appearance and performance.
