The F 1 class of the Royal Württemberg State Railways comprised 28 triple-coupled steam freight locomotives that were built in 1893 by the Esslingen machine factory.

They were similar to the F 1c class , but had a single steam expansion engine. The wheelbase was 5,000 mm. The front and rear axles were connected to the frame and to each other in such a way that they could be adjusted to the curve radius driven by means of the Klose steering mechanism . The choice fell on this complicated engine because too large fixed axles make the curve more difficult and lead to high wear, short axles do not allow high speeds and the five-fold coupled class G had been in use successfully since 1892.

The dimensions of the cylinders corresponded to those of class F 2 , the wheel diameter was 1380 mm and the boiler pressure 14 bar. The other vehicle dimensions corresponded to class F 1c. The maximum speed was set at 60 km / h and thus significantly higher than that of classes F 2 and Fc.

The previously built six locomotives with compound engines were classified as class F 1c. Despite their good running properties, the Klose types were no longer procured due to high maintenance costs. Instead, class Fc locomotives were built again from 1896.

Eleven copies were intended for takeover by the Reichsbahn as 53 8401 to 53 8411, but were taken out of service before 1925 and no longer appeared in the final redesignation plan .

The locomotives were coupled with two-axle tender tenders .
